Nottingham Youth Step to the Beat for Better Health

In a time when youth mental health and physical inactivity are growing concerns, Runspire Nottingham is hitting all the right notes with an innovative new initiative. Introducing “Run/Walk to the Beat,” a music-fueled fitness program designed to inspire teens aged 14-19 to get moving, stay active, and connect with others. Starting in January 2025, this unique program blends the power of music, community, and movement to support better health and wellbeing among Nottinghamshire’s youth.

The Need for Action

Recent statistics reveal why initiatives like this are essential:

  • Around 1 in 4 young people face mental health challenges, with anxiety and depression being the most common issues (source: Mental Health of Children and Young People in England 2022).

  • Only 44% of young people in Nottinghamshire meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity, leading to risks of poor health and wellbeing.

  • Physical inactivity correlates with increased stress, social isolation, and lower overall wellbeing.

By addressing these challenges, “Run/Walk to the Beat” aims to create a safe and enjoyable environment where young people can thrive physically and mentally.

A Musical Solution

Imagine jogging or walking with friends, energized by a playlist of your favorite tunes. That’s the heart of “Run/Walk to the Beat.” The program debuts with a free Music Run taster session on Saturday, 11th January 2025, from 1–2 pm at Jubilee Park, Netherfield. Teens will enjoy music playlists curated by their peers while engaging in relaxed, community-driven physical activity. To top it off, participants can unwind post-session with hot chocolate and biscuits.

The energy continues with a 4-week Music Run program, kicking off on 18th January. These weekly Saturday sessions from 1–2 pm offer an accessible way for teens to embrace fitness, make new connections, and build lasting habits.

Community Collaboration

“Run/Walk to the Beat” is powered by meaningful partnerships. Runspire Nottingham has teamed up with Nottingham CVS and Greenspaces to provide expertise and resources that make this initiative accessible and impactful. Together, they’re breaking down barriers to fitness and ensuring that all young people have the opportunity to participate, regardless of ability or experience.

A Healthier Future

This program is about more than just fitness—it’s a movement. By tackling the dual challenges of physical inactivity and mental health struggles, “Run/Walk to the Beat” empowers young people to build resilience, confidence, and a sense of belonging. It’s a testament to how local initiatives can address national issues with creativity and care.
