Everyone uses apps differently – and Emma’s approach to Strava is a great reminder that it doesn’t have to be all about numbers, pace, or comparison.
How Emma Got Started
Emma first started using Strava after a running colleague recommended it as an easy way to keep track of her running and walking. She uses the free version, which gives her everything she needs without overcomplicating things.
“It does exactly what I need it to – I don’t feel any pressure to use the paid version.”
Keeping Track (Without Obsessing)
Strava helps Emma record her distance, time, pace and elevation, and even flags up personal bests along the way. But for Emma, it’s never been about chasing stats.
“I’m much more interested in seeing how far I’ve run or walked – and I love looking back at the maps of my routes.”

From Couch to 5K to a Marathon 🏃♀️
Emma used Strava during the final weeks of her Couch to 5K journey, finding it really encouraging to see her progress build over time. That simple habit of recording her runs
The Social Side – In a Healthy Way
Emma enjoys seeing what her friends are up to on Strava and discovering new places to run or walk. She gives kudos, joins challenges, and uses them as a gentle nudge to get outside.
“I’m not interested in how fast anyone else is – I only compete with myself.”
She also shares a really important point: Strava can affect confidence if you let it. Everyone’s journey is different, and comparison just isn’t helpful.
Simple, Easy, and Private
Emma finds Strava really easy to use – no tech headaches involved.
“I just press record at the start and save at the end. That’s it.”
She’s also made use of Strava’s privacy settings, choosing who can see her activities and hiding start and finish points. That way, she can enjoy tracking her movement while feeling comfortable and in control.
Emma’s Takeaway
Strava doesn’t have to change how you run or walk, it can simply be a friendly record of what you’ve done and where you’ve been.
Track your miles. Enjoy the routes. Celebrate your progress. And remember: your only competition is you.
