From Breathless to Empowered: The Journey Behind Runspire Nottingham

Years ago, I was stuck in a life I didn’t recognise. At over 20 stone, I struggled to walk up the stairs without being out of breath. My mental health was at rock bottom, crippled by anxiety and depression. Then came the moment that changed everything.

It was a simple Facebook photo, but when I saw it, I hated what I saw. That image became my turning point. I knew I needed to change.

The gym didn’t feel like the right fit for me, so I decided to try running. It wasn’t easy. Those first steps were painful, and every breath felt like a challenge. But something incredible happened, I started to love it. Each run gave me a little more confidence, a little more strength.

Over time, running transformed not just my body but my entire outlook on life. I discovered a newfound resilience and positivity that rippled into every area of my life. I went on to complete the London Marathon not once, but twice. I earned a degree and achieved milestones I once thought were impossible. And in the process, I found love and married my incredible wife, Emma.

But most importantly, I found purpose. I wanted to help others experience the same transformation I had—a way to break free from the weight of life’s challenges, both physical and mental.

That’s how Runspire Nottingham was born.

It all started in my hometown of Coalville, a place that, like many communities, deserves more opportunities for health and connection. I trained as a personal trainer, run leader, and Nordic walking leader, and I launched what was then Bulwell Runners. I couldn’t have imagined the impact it would have. People came together, supported each other, and transformed their lives, just as I had.

In May 2023, we officially became a registered charity. With a bigger vision, we rebranded to Runspire Nottingham, reflecting our mission to inspire and uplift every individual who joins us. Since expanding in 2024, we’ve grown into five project areas across Nottingham, delivering running, walking, and Nordic walking sessions that are as much about mental health and community as they are about fitness.

Our dream doesn’t stop here. By 2027, we plan to bring this life-changing movement to 15 locations, including Mansfield and Derbyshire.

The journey hasn’t been easy—it’s been filled with challenges and hard work—but it’s been worth every step. Seeing people find their confidence, improve their health, and rediscover their joy makes it all worthwhile.

Runspire Nottingham isn’t just about exercise. It’s about rewriting your story. It’s about taking that first step, no matter how small, and discovering just how far you can go when you have the support of a community that believes in you.

If you’ve ever felt stuck, overwhelmed, or ready for a change, I’m here to tell you: it’s never too late. Small steps can lead to extraordinary changes.

Join us, and let’s make those first steps together. Your journey starts here.
