Meet Bimal: Finding a "Buzz" and Beating Loneliness through Couch to 5K
Bimal’s story is a powerful reminder that exercise is about much more than physical fitness. It’s about mental resilience and finding a community when you need it most.
The Challenge: The Toll of Caring
Bimal, 48, lives in the south of Nottingham and spends his life looking after his brother, who has mental health issues. While Bimal is a dedicated carer, the years of responsibility eventually took a significant toll on his own mental health, leading to a decline in his well-being and a sense of deep isolation.
Before joining Runspire, Bimal described his activity level as "literally couch". He knew he needed to exercise for his mental health but didn't feel comfortable in a traditional gym environment.

The Turning Point: Getting Out the Door
Bimal decided to join the Couch to 5K (C25K) program because he liked the idea that "everyone starts from the beginning". However, his journey wasn't without obstacles. He often struggled with high anxiety and a low mood before sessions, finding it very easy to "talk himself out" of coming.
The breakthrough came through the support of his coach, Paul, and the Runspire community:
-
Expert Leadership: Bimal credits Paul for being a "great leader" who kept him running when things got tough. He jokes that once he arrives, Paul "is not going to let me leave," which provides the necessary push to finish.
-
Shared Motivation: Seeing others in the group struggle and persist created a sense of accountability. "If they're struggling and they're doing it, keep going," Bimal noted, "we're just motivating each other".
-
Safe Space: For someone who felt "very isolated," the group became a vital way to fight against loneliness.
"You don't realise when you are looking after and caring for someone full time... how lonely that can be. But coming here... I feel a hundred times better afterwards."

The Result: Graduation and a New Outlook
Despite his initial doubts, Bimal successfully graduated from the program, completing the full course. He describes the feeling after a run as a "buzz" that lifts his mood and leaves him feeling "fantastic". By being honest with himself and pushing through his anxiety to get out the door, he has transformed his daily life.
Bimal’s Advice to You
If you are struggling with anxiety or feeling hesitant about starting your own journey, Bimal has two pieces of advice:
-
Don’t Overthink It: "There’s so many excuses. I say just give one try... I guarantee you will [like it]".
-
Don’t Delay: "Don’t delay... it only gets worse putting it off. You do feel better afterwards".
Bimal’s journey proves that the hardest part is the first step, but the reward is a community and a "buzz" that changes everything. As Bimal says, the goal is simple: "We're getting off the couch"
